During my stay in India in 2024, I realized that this is likely the last generation of Apatani women to bear these distinctive bodily modifications on their faces. Nasal and ear enlargements, as well as facial tattoos, are no longer permitted for the newer generations. This is because, outside their tribe, they are not well regarded, and like many people around the world, they aspire to a better future for their families in economic terms. By not having these facial modifications, they have greater opportunities to access better jobs in the Indian government or in companies outside their village.
